DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?
The needles I use are high-quality Japanese manufactured sterile needles and are almost as fine as hairs. They are inserted very superficially and many people do not realise they are in! Occasionally someone feels a tingling sensation on needling, and rarely, a dull ache. Almost all people register surprise at how comfortable their treatment is. If needling is a problem to you, remember that “acupuncture treatment” can also include warming a herb on the area, tapping, or applying pressure to the point, so treatment is available to the needle-phobic.

HOW MUCH TREATMENT WILL I NEED?
For the treatment of painful conditions, I recommend that you plan to have between four and six sessions, either weekly or fortnightly. I would expect that after four sessions you should be able to sense an improvement. For other conditions I recommend that you have two consecutive treatments one week after the next, and then perhaps space out the next sessions- for instance- to coincide with a certain time of the menstrual cycle. Some patients attend for a concentrated period of treatment, and then return for a booster treatment monthly or two or three times a year as they find this helps them to maintain well-being.

CAN CHILDREN HAVE ACUPUNCTURE?
I treat babies and young children using the Japanese technique called “Shonishin”- a gentle no-needle treatment involving stroking and tapping points. I often teach parents how to apply the treatment at home too. In general children require much lighter and less treatment than their adult counterparts.
